Remember when you were little and someone didn't come through, and you'd whine something like, "you promised" or "you broke your promise" ?? or when you were on the other end of it, and you'd promise something to someone that you knew you couldn't keep??
do you think people imagine they've been promised something when the other person didn't really promise at all?
do you think people promise and truly mean it or do they just make and break promises like it's no big deal?
i'm not sure, but promising is kind of a weird, imperfect thing.
"You made me promises, promises
Knowing I'd believe
Promises, promises
You knew you'd never keep"
--Promises lyrics by Naked Eyes
"We must not promise what we ought not, lest we be called on to perform what we cannot"
--Abraham Lincoln
